Now that I’ve finished my July challenge, having written a short poem every single day, I can say both that I’ve enjoyed the experience and that I am extremely glad I don’t have to write another poem today. Writing poetry means a lot to me, but it’s not really a “challenge” if you don’t end up just a little glad to have come out the other side of it.
While I approached the challenge in a lighthearted way (not every poem had to be a masterpiece, and they could be silly or serious as my muse took me), I did want to avoid repeating myself, and in the final days I found it harder to hit the sweet spot. The better poems definitely came earlier in the month, though there are a few from later on that I like pretty well.
Now that August has come, I can put my attention back on developing other aspects of my writing craft. So how long will it be before I write another poem? It probably won’t be today, but it will come as it comes. I plan to take at least this weekend to read without writing much. Next weekend, we should have something more interesting to bond over, you and I.
